Is Christianity Intolerance?

Christianity is both Tolerant and Intolerant.

According to a dictionary  “tol·er·ant/ˈtälərənt/ as an Adjective: Is showing a willingness to allow the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with  (of a plant, animal, or machine). Able to endure (specified conditions or treatment).”

Here is an example of the modern sense of tolerance:  “the unwilling to say anything is wrong and ascribe a value to something. But really, not calling something as it is, is reflecting a value; the value of relativism, that nothing is really wrong.

There really is no Tolerance in Relativism”

By Gregory Koukl

I think we all need to step back and review just what does Tolerance mean. Some use the term to shut people up, a form of verbal bullying. Note the definition above in the light of Christianity’s tolerant position. It permits opinions, God side Isa 1:18  “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, Isa 41:21  “Present your case,” says the LORD. “Bring forth your strong reasons,” says the King of Jacob. Act 17:2  Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures…. Christianity is all about reality, the way the world really is. Having other opinions about it is understandable, but in the end The Creators reality is the right one. God will not force anyone to believe His reality!! He made the rules, we are free to refuse his rules. Nevertheless, there is a price to pay for not following His reality.

We are all Tolerant and Intolerant. Our nations Law permit some things and forbids other. If you violate the law, would you say our laws are intolerant in a derogatory way? In like manner, The parent has rules that the child must follow. The spouse has expectations that if violated could lead to divorce, or worse. Would one say that our families are intolerant in a pejorative way. Of course NOT!! In like manner Christianity is Tolerant and Intolerant! To think otherwise is to fail to understand the meaning of the words.

Here are a few other ways that Christianity is tolerant:  Mat 5:43  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. 44  “But I say to you, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, BLESS those who curse you, do good to those WHO HATE YOU, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,  Eph 4:32  And BE KIND to one another, TENDER HEARTED, FORGIVING one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. Mat 7:3  “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?  4  “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5  “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

That is indiscriminate tolerance.

I hope this help you see how Christianity teaches tolerance and will not tolerate the violations of the Creators rules.
